Bed bugs are making a fast comeback across the globe reaching epicemic levels. Any temperature under 48 ºC provides a thriving environment for bed bugs. Below are 3 ways to prevent bed bug infestation.

A. Understand the cryptic habits of the pest

Learn to identify a bed bug

Bed bugs are parasitic insects that feed on blood. They belong to any specie of the genus Cimex, and are members of the Cimicidae (Cimicids) family.

Cimex lectularus, the most notorious of the Cimicidae family, prefers human blood. The insect is also called red coat because of its reddish-brown color.

It has short golden hairs on its body. Its head is short and broad with a pair of compound cone-like eyes. It has 2 antennae segmented into 4 parts. Its slender proboscis is held closely along the ventral surface of the head and prothorax. All members of the Hemiptera family, the scientific name for true bugs, have beak-like piercing mouthparts.

It has no wings. It has a pair of maxillae and mandible called a stylet fascicle that develops overtime into a 3 segmented beak that allows it to take blood. The insect has a flat oval structure with 6 well-developed legs.

Its claws are designed to climb up rough vertical surfaces such as paper, wood and fabric. It is about 1/4-inch in length before feeding. It tends to hide near the bed and spread to other areas when the population grows.

Know the ways bed bugs can get into your home

They can get into your home in 3 ways:

1. Person – someone physically takes them inside the home in personal belongings or luggage

2. Thing – they get into the house in used furniture, equipment, clothes or other used items

3. Forced invasion – they crawl from an adjoining apartment through wall voids, utility line, heating ducts or mail chutes into your home.

The pests are found in cinemas, schools, universities, stores, on ships, airplanes and other public transportation, hotels, hostels, sheltered accommodations and other public lodgings.

Moving home is another way way they can get into boxes, especially if you hire delivery vehicles to move your stuff. Delivery vehicles are sources of bed bug infestation because many people use the service.

Know where bed bugs hide in the house

1. The pest love to stay close to the host’s resting place – the bed. They love to hide in the mattress, bedframe and box spring.

2. The pest’s flat oval structure allows it to fit into cracks and crevices in furniture, between joints in the floor, and other objects when unfed.

3. The pest thrills in warm environments. It is known to enter computers, DSL ports and other electrical equipment.

B. Prevent bed bugs from entering your home

Traveling is the most common way to collect the pests into your luggage and personal belongings. If you travel abroad frequently inspect the hotel room before unpacking your luggage.

1. Examine the headboard and the wall behind the headboard.

2. Pull back the sheets and look for blood spots on the mattress. Inspect along seams, tufts, folds, underneath tags and crevices in the mattress.

3. Inspect along the edges of the box spring and in the seams of the bedding.

4. Examine wood and upholstered furniture, especially along crevices and seams.

5. Do not put your baggage on the floor. Use the luggage holder or store your suitcase in the bath tub until you’ve inspected the room.

Shopping is another way you can collect them into your personal belongings. Consider these tips when shopping to prevent a bed bug infestation.

1. Carefully inspect the seams of garments before fitting them.

2. Do not place your clothes on cushioned seats or on carpeted floor in the fitting room. Hang your clothes on hooks in the fitting room.

3. Place all purchased items into bags. Seal the bags tightly before leaving the store. Wash or dry clean the clothes before you wear them.

Public transport is another way to collect the pests in your personal belongings. Consider these tips.

1. Use vehicles in good condition. For example, use a taxi that has no holes in the seat.

2. Inspect the seat and along creases when you enter the vehicle.

3. Do not use the trunk or other compartments if possible.

4. Use the garment hanger.

5. Check your clothes and shoes for bed bugs as soon as you get out of the vehicle.

6. Buy a few bed bug-proof luggage liners if you travel regularly.

C. Prevent bed bugs from spreading in your home

If the pests have invaded your home, act quickly to limit the invasion.

1. Vacuum the mattress and box spring to remove bed bugs and eggs.

2. Treat the mattress and box spring.

3. Cover the mattress and box spring with vinyl zippered covers for at least a year. Seal any rips on the encasement with duct tape.

4. Move the bed away from the wall.

5. Use climb up interceptors, moat traps or other monitoring devices to create a barrier between the pest and the host.

6. Make sure the linen, bed skirts and blankets do not touch the floor.

Hygiene and non-hygiene techniques

1. Wash bedding and clothing for a minimum of 30 minutes. Set the temperature at the thermal death point (60 ° C) limit.

2. Caulk cracks along baseboard moldings

3. Seal holes where pipes or wires go through the wall

4. Reduce clutter in the room.

5. Fill cracks in floor boards, furniture and bedframe

6. Repair peeling wallpaper and tighten any loose light switch covers.

Bed bug infestation has a number of health effects including psychological effects, skin rashes and allergic reactions. Bed bug bites may cause a range of skin manifestations. The more you can learn about the pest the better equipped you are to prevent an infestation in your home.

Although virtually invisible to the naked eye, bed bugs can wreak havoc in your home. If you are looking for information about how to get rid of bed bugs, there is little doubt that you have already experienced the stress and headache that this pest infestation can bring.

Unfortunately, it can be very difficult to get rid of bugs, which is why you will likely want to seek the assistance of a professional pest control operator. Nevertheless, there are some techniques you can try first to get rid of bed bugs, although some of these methods will be costly.

First, you will want to find them and wash any infested items with hot water. Mattresses, upholstery, and plush items that cannot be easily washed with hot water and detergent in your washing machine must be steam cleaned.

Bugs will die when exposed to temperatures above 50C and since steam cleaners release steam at 100C, they can be effective for killing those pests.

Alternatively, bed bugs can also be killed if they are exposed to temperatures below -20C, so you may be able to kill off bugs on small items by placing them in the freezer.

Keep in mind, bed bugs must be exposed to 4 full days at a consistent temperature below -20C for freezing to be an effective method. Any items that cannot be cleaned using these methods should be thrown out.

Since bed bugs will attach to wood and fabric, and their eggs hold firmly to such surfaces, you will need to vacuum regularly using a stiff brush attachment. Using a firm back-and-forth scraping motion you should vacuum mattresses, floors, upholstery, draperies, and all surfaces of your home.

Handheld vacuums and vacuums with a cloth bag, and vacuums with fabric hoses are not ideal because these items will become infested with pests. The best vacuums have a HEPA filter as they will collect insect and dust allergens.

When you have finished vacuuming, you should plug the vacuum hose with a wad of paper towel to prevent bed bugs from escaping. In fact, it is also a good idea to let the vacuum run for a few moments to ensure that the bugs are sucked into the vacuum bag. You will also need to wash all vacuum attachments with hot water and detergent.

Finally, you may find some commercially available pesticides that can help kill an infestation. Before purchasing a pesticide, carefully read the label to ensure that it is the best product for your situation.

Never use pesticide treatments on people, pets, or bedding unless the label indicates that you can use it for these purposes. In addition, never use pesticides on baby furniture, clothes, or toys.

As mentioned, bed bugs are particularly resilient and it is difficult to completely clear an infestation. If you have been unsuccessful in your efforts to get rid of bed bugs, it is time to call a pest control professional.

At one point, after staying in a hotel I found that bed bugs were sleeping in the same bed I was. This surprising is very popular with people who have been staying in hotels, dorms and even hospitals.

If you are a owner of these hotels, dorms, or hospitals then you will want to read this so you can find out how to discreetly get rid of bed bugs. So whether you are person who stays at a hotel or runs one, then you will want to read the most simple method to get rid of bed bugs.

Step 1 is how to do a correct inspection for these bed bugs. You will want to know what these bed bugs look like and where to inspect. In your inspection you will first start with the bed. Bed fleas can live in couches, beds, futons and many other locations, but we will use a mattress for an example.

In a mattress look through the seams or edges of the mattress. You will need to peel these back and sometimes find these critters sleeping or full of blood. After you carefully inspect all the edges and seams, you then want to pick up the mattress and look at the box spring. You can also pop open the mattress and inspect inside of it through the bottom.

So with your mattress inspected you will want to move toward inspecting around the room. The next items are very easy to inspect and will be important to focus on. First, check all the dresser drawers in your room. Take the drawers out and inspect the bottom of them.

After the dresser move on to looking at the plug outlets and electricity outlets. These outlets can be popped open and looked at. I have found many times bed bugs sleeping in these plug and electric outlets. Be sure to be careful when dealing with electricity outlets.

Now we can move to step 2, and step 2 is about using a natural speedy solution. Since you at this point only care about how to get rid of bed bugs from your home, then you will be presented a safe non-toxic fast solution.

I can only recommend one method on how to get rid of bed bugs without calling an exterminator. Now, exterminators can be excellent resources, but this is if you choose not to hire a professional.

It is quite simple to get rid of bed bugs without a professional. What I would recommend is to use a bed bug spray which the professionals. hotels, hospitals and other bed bug sufferers use.

In my experience bed bug bully has been excellent resource and you can look for other types of natural bed bug sprays. Most you will find are harmful pesticides and may have you evacuate or throw away your furniture.

You do not need to throw away anything or evacuate when using natural bed bug solution, like bed bug bully. This is the fastest effective method I have found to be successful and it is truly up to you which solution you can use.

Step 3 is your last step and you will simply need to clean up the mess. In order to do this, you will want to take your vacuum cleaner and sweep around all the locations that had have bed bugs.

If you use a good solution that is natural like the bed bug bully, you will not need to evacuate or throw any of your items away. You simply will just wish to take the vacuum and clean around all the mattresses, couches, futons, and other locations you may have had bed bugs.

d. Apply spray insecticide to walls, carpet edges, underneath baseboard and where the carpet meets the baseboard.

e. Treat the bed frame and headboard including joints, grooves and screw holes with direct contact spray. Use dust insecticide in cracks and crevices.

f. Use mattress encasement after treating the mattress.

Follow-up procedures: Step 4 in Bed Bug Management

After about 10 days, use monitoring devices to observe bed bug activity. Inspect and treat all the harbourages once more. Repeat the process until all the pests are eliminated.

Bed bug management requires focus, patience and time. It is best to hire a pest management firm to do the job if you are not willing to dedicate yourself to the task. If the harbourages are not treated thoroughly you won’t get rid of the pests.

If you’ve recently discovered that you have bed bugs in your home then chances are you have been searching online for an effective solution. There are quite a few options available both online and offline.

Bedroom Guardian is one of the products that have been recommended by many online review websites as the number one solution to put an end to all your bed bugs problems.

The question however is: Does Bedroom Guardian really work or is that all the noise online is just hype?

Below I want to give you a 100% unbiased Bedroom Guardian Review so that you can know what it is, how it works, the pros and cons in an effort to help you make an informed decision if it is right for you.

So What Exactly is Bedroom Guardian?

This product come in a kit containing a bed bug detector as well as a bed bug repellent powder and/or spray. According to the official website this repellent can work in as little as 24 hours to kill bed bugs.

The detector unit is a flat disc that you can place under your bed or mattress for a few hours and it will confirm whether or not you do have a bed bug infestation. This is very important because at times those little monsters can be mistaken for other insect or visa versa.

The repellent powder or spray on the other hand is a natural solution that contains cedar oil, glycerin, potassium sorbate, soybean oil, rosemary oil and ethyl lactate. All of these ingredients in combination is claimed to keep bed bugs at bay.

Unfortunately, at the time of writing this bedroom guardian review I was unable to find scientific backings to this claim.

How Does The Bedroom Guardian Work To Kill Bed bugs?

The repellent is made up of microscopic particles known as diatoms. According to the official website these particles are completely safe for humans. Bed bugs on the other hand, no so!

Because of their soft exoskeleton, when the bed bugs traverse these diatoms, it punctures them and eradicate their exoskeleton leaving them to dehydrate and die.

All you have to do is to first place the detector unit either under your bed or between the box spring and mattress. Once you have detected that you have bed bugs, you would then place the repellent powder or spray around the areas affected and that’s it.

So Does It Really Work As Claimed?

Reviews online are mixed at the moment. Most blogs give the product positive reviews but then again, some of these blog owners are compensated. While you may be a little edgy in trusting blog reviews though, there are some good news in the mix as well.

One of the best places to find unbiased reviews is discussion forums. This is where you’ll find persons who have actually used the product and are giving their feedback. After checking several forums, it is safe to say that the number of positive reviews outnumbered the negative ones.

From what I could deduce, most customers said that the product takes at least 2-3 days to work as opposed to the 24 hours claimed by the official website.

With that being said, let’s look at some of the pros and cons of the bedroom guardian kit.

A Look At The Pros And Cons

Pros

The product comes with a 30 days money back guarantee – This is good because if you purchase the product and you are not getting good results, you can get your money back.

The kit is affordable – the cost is only $9.95 to have them ship you a kit.

The company ships worldwide and the shipping is free.

It doesn’t contain any harsh chemicals that could possible affect your health.

It is very easy to use.

Cons

Although the product is $9.95, you are automatically signed up for a subscription in which they’ll send you a package every month unless you cancel. Also, following monthly payments will be $19.95 instead of $9.95.

If you use the repellent powder, it can cause a mess in your home.

Bedroom Guardian is not sold in Walmart, Target, Home Depot or any offline stores. It is exclusively sold online.

Takes a few days to work

If your house is completely infested, you may need another option.

1. First of all you are going to need some gloves paper towels and caulk. You will be need gloves because you will be dealing with the bed bugs directly and paper towels for the same reason.

2. Go into the room where you have the biggest infestation. This room is mainly the place where they get in from the outside.

3. You should know by now where the bed bugs are, if not there are usually hiding in places where there isn’t much light. For instance check in dressers, closets, under the mattress, and behind the door in the hinges.

4. What you want to do is to manually gather all the bed bugs with your paper towels:) Make sure you dispose of them, preferably outside away from your house or even flush down the toilet.

5. Now you should have gotten all the bed bugs you can see visibly out of your house or apartment. So take that caulk and caulk all the little cracks and holes in you house that lead to the outside. Many bed bugs crawl through little cracks even through the outlets!

6. I would then take your mattress and throw it away because eggs are hard to see and so are the newborns. If you cant afford to throw away your mattress clean it thoroughly!

7. If you still have the same mattress or you bought a new one, you will need to wrap it plastic so the bugs not have a nesting place.

8. Clean, Clean, Clean…..

That is it. It is a tiring process but will work. Remember there are different ways to do this so don’t be discouraged if this isn’t what you exactly want to do.

It might sound difficult but friends you can have the home bedbug free in just three days, don’t believe me; just read the fowling article and you might find some good points for doing just that. Here is the outline of things which you might be required to do while this period.

Day 1

Plan, inspect, and shop for the anti bed bug products.

Day 2

Clean the home, and wash the laundry, fill the holds and cracks.

Day 3

Spray the whole house after cleanup.

The plan for bedbugs removal in three days starts with planning. If you have the big house like us moving furniture can be problem. The solution is having good planning and arranging the whole work in such a way that you might have workable area in home while the extermination is being done. The other option can be to give the kids a weekend holiday.

The complete inspection of home should be done to find the extent of damage the bugs have done. For this purpose you can start by putting the plastic tapes around the carpets. This might sound unsightly but believe me its essential. The bed bugs quite often hide under the carpets; they stick to the tape very easily.

The removal of every piece of clothing and washing that in boiling water can give the healthy life to your laundry. Include the antibacterial and insecure liquid in the wash along the fabric softener to get rid of any eggs of bedbugs that might be attached there.

After the vacuum you should do the washing of with hot water to most area you suspect for bugs. There are some excellent enzyme cleaners that can be used for natural insect eliminators.

The great thing scrubbing with anti insect cleaner is that it can be quite useful for removal of other things also including, the mosquitoes, scabies, mites, lice and flies.

The third day can end the whole bed bug infestation after the spray and removal of the dead bugs, but you should be careful to dispose the dead bugs far from the home in plastic bags so chance of any eggs returning from the trash would not remain.

Bed bugs, are parasitic insects that belong to the human blood-feeding insect family of Cimicidae, commonly known as Cimex Lectularius. This species is also known for several names, including crimson rambler, redcoat, and mahogany flat.

As the name suggests, bedbugs can be found in houses, particularly beds and other sleeping areas. They are also active at night and can feed in their hosts without being noticed. These insects are obligatory hematophagous (bloodsucking) type that mostly feed on humans.

They are attracted to hosts through carbon dioxide, chemicals, and warmth. A bed bug uses two feeding tubes to pierce the host’s skin, with one injecting its saliva and the other withdrawing the blood.

There are several health effects that bed bugs cause, such as skin rashes and allergic symptoms; however, it can be hard to identify their bites from other insect bites.

Generally, their bites are usually red with a darker red spot in the center, arranged in a cluster, itchy, and commonly located on the arms, neck, or face. There are cases when the bites cause severe itching.

When this happens, oral antihistamines or steroid creams can be applied for relief, while antibiotics are used for secondary bacterial infections.

However, there are cases wherein a person experiences severe skin reactions or allergic reaction to the bites; therefore, necessitating seeing a doctor for professional treatment.

Meanwhile, if you want to know the methods on how to get rid of bed bugs, you need to remember that it isn’t an easy procedure. Since eliminating them is a tedious task, you should seek professional help for this.

In choosing an exterminator, you should select one who is in the industry for more than five years and has a reputable background. You should also select one who has been certified by your local officials. Although certified exterminators may cost you $250-$1,000 per room.

You should have a guarantee that all of the aggravating insects are eliminated. They also make follow-up inspections weeks or months after you hire them.

Furthermore, bed bug treatment generally involves an extensive inspection of the house, particularly the bedroom.

Several pest control experts suggest household owners to conduct deep cleaning, which includes dismantling bed frames and furniture, scrubbing infested surfaces using a stiff brush to eliminate eggs, and encase mattresses within special covers.

There are also certain guides available on how to remove bed bugs. One method that some companies recommend is the use of foggers or bug bombs to kill them; however, experts believe that this method will cause other bugs to flee through the walls, causing them to spread to other areas.

Moreover, natural remedies are also recommended, such as vacuuming, steam cleaning, and using diatomaceous earth to stop infestations.

Bed bugs are small, wingless insects that feed on the blood of warm-blooded animals including humans and pets. Their eggs are very small, about the size of a poppy seed.

Their larvae are the size of a grain of rice. Adults are about a quarter of an inch long, reddish-brown in color, and fairly flat. They live in dark crevices, such as those in mattresses and bed frames. To date, they are not known to spread diseases.

Bed bugs have suddenly become an epidemic. Adults are fairly easy to kill, but their eggs are more resistant. An adult can live up to a year without feeding, the nymphs only 2-3 months. After World War II the problem of these nuisance insects had virtually disappeared in America. Why?

Because of the use of DDT. DDT has since been outlawed in America, but its use continues in many third world countries. Global travel, flea markets, and second hand merchandisers have enabled the spread of bed bugs.

Some have asked if we can just break out the DDT for a brief time to get the bed bugs back under control. According to the CDC (Center for Disease Control) the bugs we are currently facing have come from countries that still use DDT and have mutated, becoming super bugs. They do not suck more blood, they are just harder to kill and resistant to DDT.

When traveling you need to take precautions to prevent assisting the bed bugs in their spread. How do you do this? Thoroughly inspect your hotel room upon arriving. Pull off the comforter, pull down the sheets and inspect the sheets and mattress, the headboard, and any dark crevices.

You are looking for small rust colored stains. Check any furniture in the room. These nasty little bugs like to travel, they can be found in furniture, behind headboards and picture frames, along the baseboards, even in electrical outlets. Leave your luggage in the car until you have sprayed your hotel room with essential oils to drive them out.

Bed bugs do not just reside in hotel rooms. They have been found in subways and rental cars, too. They are not necessarily a sign of filth or neglect.

They are very travel savvy and can withstand a wide range of temperatures; they quickly adapt to their environment and are excellent at eluding pest control specialists. They can spread through the pipes, hitch rides on or in vacuum cleaners, on clothes, and on luggage. They can be anywhere!

If you hire an exterminator be sure to look into the chemicals they will be using. Also be aware that they will need to make several trips.

I did some research looking for natural pesticides that are effective and there are few, you will need to really look into it to find one, but you really want to do so as the main place the exterminator will be hitting is your bed and you will be lying in and sleeping in whatever they use.

Avoid pesticides and treatments containing permethrins and pyrethrins, common ingredients that can cause severe skin irritation. They are believed by some to cause cancer with prolonged exposure.

There are alternatives to exterminators. The use of essential oils has proven effective in testing done at several Universities in Utah. A word of warning, these tests have shown across the board that only certified therapeutic grade, pure and potent essential oils have a long-lasting effect on bed bugs.

Be Young brand, EOBBD certified essential oils are the most powerful on the market in the US today. They were proven successful in all the tests conducted.

Historically Eucalyptus has been used to repel bed bugs and has been used with great success. The Native Americans repelled these bugs and lice by relying on pine needles and Cedarwood chips in their mattresses.

The Copaiba tree of Brazil protects itself against insect infestation through its resin. That resin is tapped and then distilled to create the Copaiba essential oil. These three essential oils can be combined to create a super bed bug spray.

Super bed bug spray

10 drops Copaiba essential oil

6 drops Eucalyptus essential oil

5 drops Cedarwood essential oil

Combine with 4 oz of good, filtered water in a dark glass spritzer bottle. Do not mix with distilled water. Shake well and spray down the mattress, bedding, headboard, etc. If you spray the bugs directly it takes them about 30 seconds to die.

If you spray them indirectly (meaning they are in the room you just sprayed down) then it takes them about 15 minutes to die. You can also diffuse this blend (just combine the oils and leave out the water) to clear a room.

Make sure you treat the whole house, if you know you have an infestation in one room you more than likely have them in more. Diffuse your mixture for 5 minutes, off for 20, on for 5.

To clear a hotel room you suspect may be infested diffuse for 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off, run through three cycles, then do one minute on and 20 minutes off. It will keep your room bug free.

If you have a severe bed bug challenge you can supercharge this formula by adding 6 drops of Oregano essential oil.

Once you have cleared out the bugs spray your bed bug essential oil blend on the linens when changing, you may want to rotate and use Spice for Life Be Young essential oil blend or Cinnamon Bark essential oil just so things do not get boring, these will also repel many little uninvited guests.

You may also choose to create bed bug repelling sachets. To do this simply purchase some empty sachets or tea bags. Fill with cornstarch, baking soda, or Starflake salts (a pure, dendric salt, produced by Be Young).

Then add about ten drops of your bed bug blend. Attach a bag to each corner of the mattress with a safety pin. This will create a relaxing aroma to enhance your sleep and will repel the bugs so they will not crawl on you.

If you are traveling these have an added bonus. After your night of rest toss these sachets in your luggage. Any hitchhiking bugs will quickly vacate your luggage or die!

When you wash your linens add 5-10 drops of your bed bug blend, Spice for Life blend or even just Eucalyptus to your wash water. This will kill any bugs or their eggs that may be on your bedding. According to my research online you want to use hot water when doing your wash. Apparently these bugs are not fond of saunas.

If you have been bitten, apply Lavender or a combination of Lavender and Tea Tree essential oils to the welts to help disinfect, kill the bacteria, and take the swelling down. If you experience pain in the bite area apply a combination of Helichrysum, Lavender, and Geranium essential oils to the area.

A girl in Texas literally had a nest of bed bugs in her hair. Her mother called Dana Clay Young at Be Young oils to find out what to do. He gave her the bed bug blend formula; she made it, added a few drops to her shampoo and after one use the bugs were dead.

Make your bed bug blend of essential oils, spray down your room and maybe add a few bug repelling sachets to the corners of your bed and you can be assured that you can sleep tight and not let the bed bugs bite.
