One of the things you have to consider when moving into your dorm room is the mattress you are going to sleep on. For sure, you are going to inherit a dorm mattress. If you have just run out of luck, the mattress can be dusty and dirty.
How to clean a mattress?
You don’t have to sweat it out. You can easily clean your mattress with the help of the following steps:
Step 1:
Do not unpack your things yet. If you need to clean the room, you should clean the room first before cleaning your bed. The dust around the room will only fly on your mattress. Cover the mattress with old bed sheets to minimize dust mite accumulation while you are cleaning the room.
Step 2:
Remove old bed sheets and set them aside. Borrow a vacuum cleaner and vacuum both sides of the mattress. Make sure you get rid of dust mites. Use a vacuum cleaner with HEPA filter or high-efficiency particular air filter. This will filter tiny dust particles that might trigger allergic reactions.
Step 3:
Treat the stains of the mattress. You can use natural cleaners. The mixture of vinegar and baking soda works in removing food and oil stains. Milk gets rid of ink stains. You can also use lemon juice for blood stains and sweat stains.
If you want to remove bad mattress odor, you can sprinkle baking soda all over the bed. Baking soda diffuses unwanted mattress odor. Let the cleaners stay on the mattress for a few hours. You can also use a soft-bristled brush to scrub out the stains.
Step 4:
After an hour, vacuum the mattress again and let it dry completely. Make sure you air it out for a few hours before using so the mattress will smell fresh and clean.
Step 5:
While you are waiting for the mattress to get dry, clean the bed frame. If you have a wooden bed frame, use an appliance polisher. This will help brighten up dingy wood. If you have a metal bed frame, just use a damp cloth to clean it out.
Step 6:
Make sure you clean the area beneath the bed. This is usually a breeding space for dust mites and bacteria. Use your vacuum cleaner. Do not sweep the area as this will only transfer dust particles in the air.
Step 7:
Once the old mattress has dried up completely, place it back on the bed frame and set it up. You should use mattress covers to protect the bed from dust mites and bed bugs. You can also use mattress toppers to increase comfort.
Step 8:
Arrange bed sheets and pillows. Neatly tuck the corners of the bed sheets under the mattress.
