What Are Air Mattresses Made of ? A Guide to Air Mattress Materials

Air Mattresses Materials

Air mattresses are made of various materials the most common of which are Polyvinyl Chloride, Rubber, and Thermoplastic Urethane. When choosing your air mattress, you need to take this factor into consideration.

This is because the material of the mattress directly influences how comfortable it can be. In this article, we provide you with a guide to air mattress materials and how to choose the material of your mattress according to your needs. Here’s a list of the most common materials for this type of mattresses:

1. Polyvinyl Chloride PVC

Polyvinyl Chloride is a type of synthetic plastic polymer. PVC comes in two forms: rigid and flexible, and this flexible form of PVC is used in manufacturing inflatable products such as air mattress.

PVC is known to be the most common material for air-mattresses, and most PVC air beds are actually very affordable and inexpensive.

The PVC makes durable air mattresses since it works very well with multiple inflation and deflation, although it is not the most rigid material available in the market. It is characterized by being water and fire-resistant, and this is such a great quality that affects the durability of your air-mattress.

One bad thing about PVC materials is that they are very bad at temperature regulation. Hence, a PVC air bed tends to get very cold or very hot according to the weather since it catches the air surrounding the bed. Moreover, it also absorbs the heat your body generates leaving you very hot in summer.

2. Rubber

Rubber comes right after PVC in popularity. Although rubber air mattresses are less common in the market, they are still a very durable type of air beds.

In fact, rubber air beds can be more durable than PVC ones because they are less stiff and more flexible. With multiple inflation and deflation, more flexible materials are always better.

However, when it comes to weight capacity, rubber loses in comparison to PVC. Rubber air mattresses are very good for indoor and outdoor purposes. The material itself is less toxic than PVC and more affordable.

3. Thermoplastic Urethane TPU

Thermoplastic Urethane is the best air mattress material introduced in the manufacturing of air mattresses. In fact, it is more durable than both PVC and rubber, and it makes the most durable air beds in the market.

It is not as common as PVC and rubber, neither is it as affordable as them. However, it still is the best in the comparison between the three materials.

TPU is known to be lighter than PVC and rubber and it is more resistant to puncturing and abrasion as well. So, if you’re willing to pay more money for the sake of great material, you should definitely go for TPU air mattress.

Average Cost of Air Mattresses According to Material

The most affordable air mattress is made of rubber.

The price range of rubber air mattresses is usually between $9 to $28.

This is while the price of PVC air mattresses ranges between $25 and $240.

As we mentioned before, rubber is actually more expensive as a material than PVC, but the fact that rubber mattresses are less popular in the market makes them cheaper than PVC and TPU.

As for the most expensive type of inflatable beds according to material, the price range of TPU air mattresses is between $80 and $350.
